Holiday Stories

I’m a sucker for a holiday story, and I think a lot of readers are too. I’d really like to do another holiday story. Santa Baby is one of my biggest sellers, and I had a great time writing it. I’m kicking around another story, Crystal Ball which would be Tree Tolbert’s story. She’s a designer and best friend of Andi from Morning Star. This would be a New Year’s Eve story.

But I’ve been thinking, there are so many books around the traditional holidays; Christmas, Valentine’s Day, etc… I think it would be cool to come up with a story for an odd holiday. (Any day but Groundhog’s Day. I HATE that movie!) Some of you might remember that my first book was written chapter by chapter on the old Mindkandy Interracial site. In honor of the 10th anniversary of that momentuous occasion, I’m thinking about doing that again. So first, you guys have to pick a holiday. Christmas, Valentine’s and New Year’s are out, but any other holiday is all good. But here’s the fun part–y’all come up with the plot and I’ll write it, a chapter a week on the blog.

It has to be a romance, but the rest is up to you. So post your ideas on the thread and we’ll vote to see whose idea gets chosen. Then it’s off to the races…oooh Derby Day. Cool with hats and mint juleps. This won’t be a formal thing, but let’s go with a couple of weeks to collect ideas. Come on y’all, show me what you’ve got.

  1. Roslyn,

This sounds like so much fun! I like the voting idea! Give me a bit of time to brainstorm an idea and I’ll submit it soon 🙂

  2. Thanksgiving!

Female co-worker blurts out an invitation to her famiy’s home for Thanksgiving when he mentions he has no plans (he’s from way out of state, maybe even Alaska).

Amusement ensues when their different expectations of what Thanksgiving entails clash on the big day. One family does a formal sitdown complete with gold chargers, candles, and cocktail clothing, the other is from a family that eats at noon and hangs out in sweats watching football. Different sides/ways of preparing sides.

The budding relationship is complicated by the fact that they are co-workers. Office gossip, conflicts of interest, etc.

  3. President Day
A day that only federal employees take off and even then most of them spend it trying to catch all the sales going on.
Sabrina- 55 years old- has been single almost her whole adult life except for the unfortunate incident she calls her marriage 25 years ago to a man who thought fist was the way to make her obey. But a cast iron skillet upside his head taught him he didn’t want to mess with her and he left faster than Speedy Gonzalez. She’s dated,(as she says a woman has to be pleased, and I gets tired of pleasing myself all the time), but trust is hard. She has surrounded herself with a wall made of stone, topped with shards of sharp glass. And if you happen to get pass the wall and glass, her heart has been encased in iron, buried beneath the Georgia dome. But on this President day- Sabrina life is about to change as she gets more than she bargains for when she meets Anthony- barley taller than her 5’5, and pale bald head.

  4. Fourth of July. Full figured Black woman participating in parade that the President is scheduled to attend. She “butts heads” with WM head of Secret Service detail.

  5. One more– this holiday is totally bizarre and only celebrated in Illinois, where I live. Casmir Pulaski Day. Here is a blurb from wikipedia: Casimir Pulaski Day is a holiday observed in Illinois on the first Monday of every March in memory of Casimir Pulaski (March 6, 1745[1] – October 11, 1779), a Revolutionary War cavalry officer born in Poland as Kazimierz Pułaski. He is known for his contributions to the U.S. military in the American Revolution by training its soldiers and cavalry.

Scenario: Female cop and firefighter (battalion chief) at huge blaze. She’s doing crowd/traffic control. He’s directing the officers and firefighters at the scene. It’s March, so it’s really cold outside.

  6. Hi Roslyn,

Maybe the story could be centered around, Black History Month. There could be several activities going on during that month to celebrate Black History.

One idea that comes to mind, is the characters work for a major health insurance company in downtown Detroit. To bring awareness and to celebrate, the two main characters are involved in a committee where they have to put together on site visits for their team. For example, they could visit The African American Museum, The Detroit Institute of Arts, etc..

  7. I like the idea of a nice Easter story. Maybe where a couple is reunited around an Easter parade or even Church. Thanks

  8. My heroine HAS to be slim, darkskinned, tall(ish) with natural hair and it would be during Swiss Lozärnerfasnacht(lLucerne carnival), which starts on Dirty Thursday and ends on Ash Wednesday in February,(carnival) and is the most famous in Switzerland. She’s an American tourist, watching a group of “Fasnächters” playing their music in the old town of Luzern(lucerne) when one approaches her. She’s in her mid forties, but didn’t find out till later he’s younger, but it’s too late. He’s an art student(Künstgeweberschule in ZH), she’s an IB(investment banker) in Switzerland for a conference of bankers……..

  9. Oooooh, sorry if this was just about American holidays. I tend to think singlemindedly…..Entschuldigung y’all!

  10. Hmm, I may need some time to come back, but I was thinking Easter or maybe even President’s Day. I’ll come back when I’ve had more time to mull this over!

  11. It’s a week before Halloween and Ferris Littleton, caramel-skinned, plus-sized, natural haired architect is beginning to freak out! Her homeowners association always has this HUGE Halloween celebration. They block off the entire neighborhood, have great food, music, carnival rides and costume competitions for all age groups, and she’s heard through the grapevine, or maybe pumpkinvine, that a CERTAIN group of her neighbors get together AFTER the celebration is over and have a Halloween party that is devilisly decedant!

She’s never been invited before to the afterparty and DAMMIT this year’s going to be different! She’s heard what goes on at the party, and for the past two years, her unbelievably sexy, tourquoise eyed, tanned, muscled, gym/spa owner neighbor Keithan Deveraux has been a regular! Why she’s lived in the development for SIX YEARS! So what if she doesn’t socialize with the neighbors much, it’s the principle of the thing! Plus, Ferris has been eyeing and lusting after Mr. Deveraux ever since he moved into the community!

As she hangs her specially made costume in her mirrored walk-in closet, she sits down on the chaise, lies back, and begins to formulate her plans for project HALLOWEENUS INTERRUPTUS!

  12. Closing the blinds and turning away from the living room window Keithan Deveraux or K.D. as his friends called him walked barefoot towards the bar in the corner by the fireplace. He needed a drink! Something strong, brown and would burn going down then start a satisfying heat in his gut – just like the feeling he got whenever he saw her. Grabbing the bottle of Dewars® Scotch in one hand and a
heavy crystal glass in the other, he continued to the chocolate suede sofa where he sank down into its smooth, supple warmth.

Leaning back, Keithan let out a deep sigh. Putting the glass on the table to his left, uncapping the bottle, and with a disgusted growl he turned the bottle up to his mouth
