I severely curtail my kid’s television watching. They can watch on the weekend’s only and even then I carefully monitor their shows. Cartoon Network has always been off-limits. I don’t like the smart-alecky kids, the sarcasm and I hate all the darned commercials. Okay, so somehow Luke got Uncle Grandpa by me this weekend when I wasn’t paying attention and then I saw this character; Mr. Gus. At first I thought I was tripping that dude looks like a caricature in
black green face. Then I heard him speak. Dude sounds like he just graduated from Amos and Andy University. He makes Jar Jar Binks look like Marcus Garvey. So yes, I had to show my son this crap so he could understand why it’s unacceptable.
What I don’t understand is why? In 2015 why is it that a Cartoon Network would green light such a character and furthermore why would anyone think it was funny? Why are people’s imaginations so limited that the best they can come up with is some shit from Birth of a Nation and Gone With the Wind. White folk complain all the time that black people bring up race all the time. You know what, you have NO IDEA how tired I am of having this conversation. I’m particularly tired of having this conversation with my kid. Having to filter and analyze everything you watch and read with a critical eye is absolutely exhausting. Problem is, I can’t stop bringing it up, because you won’t. I’ll be damned if you’ll destroy my child with the monstrous crime against humanity that is white supremacy.
WHAT IN THE HELL IS WRONG WITH TELEVISION SHOWRUNNERS?
For two and a half years I followed Person of Interest, primarily because of the phenomenon that is Taraji P. Henson. Only to watch them not only shoot her dead in the street like a dog in order to elevate a robotic sociopath, but also totally change the basic premise of the show. Then the motherfuckers lied, lied and lied some more. Yes, they fridged Carter to elevate two white women. Okay, cool, you don’t want me to watch your show, I won’t watch it. Not only will I not watch the show, I watch NOTHING on CBS, or anything created by the show runner or his brother.
Then you have Sleepy Hollow. Can someone please explain to why any sane person would take a hit television show, sideline all the stars who made it a hit in order to elevate a woman who can’t act her way out of a wet paper bag and is apparently incapable of speaking above a whisper? Where they do that at? They took Jenny’s backstory and gave it to some random white dude, and have literally turned Abbie into Ichabod and Katrina’s mammy. And don’t even get me started on how callously she treated Irving, a man who literally died trying to fight for the Witnesses. Irving wouldn’t even be in this mess were it not for her, even after his child was possessed by a demon he stayed the course. Yet, she couldn’t even comfort him in his time of distress. Nope got to go save Massah and Miss Anne. *vomit* It’s like the new show runner couldn’t comprehend a black woman being the lead in a television show, while her sister occupies the “adventurous Indiana Jones” role. Black women have to be someone’s handmaiden, don’t you know? Even if it makes no goddamned sense.
As the Sony leaks have so aptly demonstrated, Hollywood is still a horribly racist town. As black folk we’ve been told repeatedly, Hollywood only sees green. Create something folk want to see and you’ll reap the rewards. In both these cases Taraji P. Henson and Nicole Beharie (et al) did just that. Clearly, Hollywood cares far more about race than it does about money because the ratings of both shows plummeted yet they carried on with the fuckery. Bottom line is for black women in Hollywood quality is meaningless, as are ratings. At the very least you would think they would be honest about it.
I was never a big television person in the first place, but yeah, I’m angry and bitter about this. I’ve spent most of my life watching white women being the star while black women are relegated to “clean up woman” status. Sorry, I have no intention of watching it anymore.

This is my favorite Christmas song. Longfellow wrote this poem in despair over his son going off to fight in the Civil War. Pessimist that I am I sometimes fear that we are on the brink of another Civil War. I pray that Longfellow is right, “God is not dead, nor does He sleep.” But given that “Hate is strong, it mocks this song,” I’m not sure.
I read an article a while back regarding the issue of racism in IR romances. I don’t remember the name of the article or I would link it. One of the points it made was that in pretty much all the IR romances, any misgivings in regard to race are usually the heroine’s. This makes sense to me. Having dated and married interracially myself there is something that is distinctly unromantic about a hero with those type issues. Though, in real life, I know of at least two cases where former skinheads have gone on to marry black women. Pamela Leigh Starr has a former racist as a hero in her book, Ironic. As much as I like Starr, she’s an incredibly talented writer even though her books have no sex, this didn’t work for me.
How do you feel about this theme? I guess some might see it as a commentary on the power of love, and I so get that, but still… And how about something less virulent? What about a hero who previously rejected the heroine because of racial issues, but has now matured? I’ve seen a lot of this in real life. White dudes who didn’t pursue a black woman because they feared the consequences, but now has now had a change of heart. Usually I look at these guys with disdain because most of the time their first (white) wife has gotten all their money, their kids are grown and they don’t even have viable sperm, but they expect to use white privilege to acquire a hot, young black woman. But what if he was still relatively young and physically attractive and hadn’t lost his draws in a divorce? Would that still creep you out? Holla!
