An unfortunate side-effect of the Obama candidacy is the mainstream media’s sudden scramble to add a ‘bit of color’ to their line-ups. CNN has the new D.L. Hughley show, whereas Comedy Central has added David Alan Grier. Even if we are willing to overlook Hughley’s agreement with Don Imus that the Rutger’s basketball team were indeed ‘nappy headed hoes,’ (Me? Fat chance!) the fact is, dude simply is not now, and never has been funny. The same can be said of Grier. The fact that the MSM responds to Obama by giving these two shows is telling. Goddess forbid they elevate someone who actually has talent.
I’ve said repeatedly that I wish that all famous black people could be put into suspended animation for the duration. Of course, considering the long drought many of them have endured I suppose it’s too much to expect them to simply sit their collective asses down. But a girl can dream, can’t she?
I was wondering about that too. I’ve never seen D.L.’s CNN show, but if his comedy routine or guest appearances on other shows is any indication of what he is capable of, it wont’t be pretty. Obviously there are a lot of black journalists who could do a better job, but I guess they figure the only way people will tune in is if it’s a black celebrity.
I think CNN is trying to compete with the Daily Show/Colbert Report. That type of humor requires a sharp intellect that Hughley demonstrably lacks. I can think of a half-dozen comics who could’ve done this show without resorting to the same buffonish nonsense that’s always Hughley’s fall-back stance.
Roslyn,
Why don’t you write in and complain. Sometimes I have the feeling that these people make these selections because they don’t have a clue. They think “We need a black person,” so they grab one of the only few famous, notorious, popular ones they know, and expect them to meet the approval of, and be representative of, all of us…
I sent a complaint to CNN today. Might send another tomorrow. This fool must be stopped.
